Charlotte's World
Everything that happens in this story takes place inside the wonderful, wild imagination of a little girl named Charlotte.
Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Charlotte. She had a happy ponytail that bounced when she ran, which was all the time! Charlotte loved to run in her backyard, and it was there, in her special place, that she had created her own amazing world.
One sunny afternoon, a big, shaggy, friendly Lion that Charlotte had made up decided to take a little nap right in her grass. But the moment the Lion started to snooze, another creature from Charlotte's mind appeared! Swish, swish, swish! Walking along the very top of the tall fence, like a secret agent, was a beautiful, spotty Leopard!
Right after the Leopard arrived, a tiny, strange Bird flew past. This little bird, which Charlotte had imagined to be silent, had special feathers and a small, fluttering thing on the edge of its wing that made a quiet flop, flop, flop sound as it went right over the fence and disappeared.
The Lion woke up and, in Charlotte’s story, thought the little bird might make a tasty snack, but the Bird was already far away! The Leopard decided he couldn't stay in the backyard. He climbed down from the fence, gave Charlotte one last, soft hug on the leg—just as she imagined he would—and whispered, "Goodbye!" But just as he was leaving, a bright, colourful Butterfly, a creature of magic in Charlotte's world, flew straight through the Leopard! The Butterfly gently landed, saying, "No, Leopard! You must go see her!" The Leopard smiled, knowing he must go follow the special silent Bird.
The Lion yawned a big, giant yawn. "I'm tired," he decided. "Time for bed!" And he padded softly back home to his imaginary cave. Finally, the little colourful Butterfly floated down and landed gently right on the top of Charlotte's ponytail. As soon as the Butterfly touched her hair, a warm, cozy magic—the magic of Charlotte’s own incredible imagination—spread through her, and she fell fast asleep. Someone—maybe it was the wind, or maybe it was an invisible mama fairy from her story—gently picked up Charlotte and tucked her into her own cozy bed.
And as the sun went down, everyone in Charlotte's world, from the Lion to the Butterfly to the special silent Bird, whispered: "Good night, Charlotte!"
