The Stone Golem
Charlotte was the kind of girl who found magic everywhere, even in the mud. One afternoon, playing by the creek, she noticed a strange little pile of smooth, gray rocks. They weren't just ordinary stones, but seemed to hum with a tiny bit of light. With a careful hand, she began to stack them, one on top of the other, like building blocks.
With a soft clack-clack-pop, the rocks shifted and rolled, clicking into place until they formed a man. He was made entirely of perfectly round river stones, and a gentle, golden light pulsed from within him.
"Hello, Charlotte," he rumbled, his voice sounding like water over pebbles. "I am the Stone Golem, and I can show you a secret river."
He held out a hand, each finger a different polished stone. Charlotte didn't think twice. She took it, and it felt cool and solid. They stepped into the creek, and the world around them began to sparkle. The little stream stretched into a wide, wonderful river with banks lined in glowing moss and trees with leaves of pure crystal. They floated along on a giant leaf, and fish that looked like scattered starlight danced around them.
The journey was a dream. Waterfalls sang soft melodies, and caves sparkled like a night sky. Finally, they came to a hidden cove where a single, glowing flower bloomed. Its petals shimmered with every color, and it smelled of sunshine and giggles. The Stone Golem called it the Smile Flower, saying it could chase away any sadness.
Charlotte gently plucked the bloom and tucked it into her pocket. The Stone Golem returned her to the creek, and the magical river faded back into the familiar, murky stream. Clutching the flower, she ran all the way home.
"Mommy!" she called, finding her mother sitting at the kitchen table. Her shoulders were slumped, and her face looked a little weary from a long day of work. "Look what I found!"
Her mom’s eyes were tired, but when she took the flower, a brilliant warmth seemed to fill the room. A wide, beautiful smile spread across her face, the kind of bright smile Charlotte loved but hadn't seen much lately because Mommy was always so busy. Her eyes twinkled, and a happy sigh escaped her lips. The Smile Flower had worked its magic, and Charlotte knew that the best part of her adventure wasn't the magical river or the dancing fish, but the simple, perfect happiness of seeing her mommy smile so freely again.
